Choosing the Right Route: New England Highway vs the Coast
Tablelands scenery or coastal views? Here's how to pick the drive that suits your next NSW getaway.

One of the most common questions we get from guests planning the next leg of their trip is simple: coast or tablelands? Both routes have their strengths, and the right answer really depends on what kind of drive you're after.
Taking the Coast
The coastal route is slower but scenic — expect more traffic through the townships, but also more lookouts, beach access, and places to stretch your legs. It suits travellers who want the journey itself to be part of the holiday.
Best for: beach stops, seafood lunches, gradual pace
Watch for: weekend traffic through popular coastal towns
Taking the Tablelands
Inland via the New England Highway is generally quicker and quieter, with cooler air and rolling countryside instead of coastline. It suits travellers who've done the coast before, or who are short on time
Best for: cooler weather, less traffic, a change of scenery
Watch for: fewer fuel stops between towns — plan ahead
Our Honest Take
If you have the extra hour or two, the coast rarely disappoints. If you're pushing to make good time, the tablelands route will get you there with far less stopping and starting. Either way, we're roughly the same distance in, so you can plan your stay around whichever route suits your trip.
